Philip Sinnreich served the Young Israel as Head Gabai for many years
and fulfilled this prominent role with sensitivity and grace. In his warm
and unassuming way, he always made members and guests feel welcome. Phil
loved our Young Israel and was beloved by everyone who knew him. Several
years ago at the age of 52, Phil was diagnosed with cancer. He battled the
disease with extraordinary courage and strength until his passing on June 16,
2009. While facing his own personal challenges, Phil reached out to every
member in our community who was going through similar struggles to share his
concern, his strength and his kindness. In his memory, The Philip Sinnreich Medical
Assistance Fund has been established to provide financial assistance to our
members who are dealing with serious illness and require help to pay for items
or services not usually covered by medical insurance. These include, but
are not limited to travel expenses, second opinions, caregivers, medical
supplies or devices, as well as short term income gaps incurred while a member
is unable to work due to illness or side effects of treatment.
Life-threatening illness can occur in the blink of an eye, and the
effects upon a family are often financially challenging and always emotionally
devastating. Rather than each of us merely helping someone we know
personally, lets join together as a community and make a commitment to help each
and every Young Israel family that is in need of our assistance. By
supporting The Philip Sinnreich Medical Assistance Fund, you will be
participating in a coordinated effort to improve the lives of your friends and
neighbors in their time of great need. In addition, your act of chesed will help
to ensure that Phil’s spirit will continue to permeate our shul and our
community. May his soul be bound up for eternal life.
